Walk-in shower or bath? How to decide.
It comes down to the room, the household and the house itself. Here's how to work it out without the guesswork.
THE SHORT ANSWER
There's no universal winner, only the right answer for your house.
We fit both, every week, and the honest version is this: a walk-in shower wins on space, access and upkeep. A bath wins with young children, deep-soak evenings and family buyers. The deciding factors are the room you have, the people using it, and whether this is the only bathroom in the house.
THE CASE FOR A WALK-IN SHOWER
Three things it does better than anything.
Space. A walk-in shower uses less floor than a bath, and with no enclosure fighting for room, small bathrooms suddenly breathe. It's the single biggest change you can make to a cramped room.
Access. No stepping over the side, no negotiating a screen. If anyone in the house is thinking about mobility, now or in twenty years, level access is the future-proof choice.
Upkeep. Less surface area, fewer awkward corners, no bath panel to keep clean behind. A well-built walk-in shower is the easiest room in the house to look after.
THE CASE FOR A BATH
And the three reasons it still earns its space.
Children. Bath time with small children is a different job to a shower. If there are little ones in the house, or visiting grandchildren, a bath earns its space every single week.
Resale. Family buyers look for at least one bath in the house. If this is the only bathroom, keeping a bath is the safer move when the keys eventually change hands.
The soak. Some people just want the soak, and no shower matches a deep bath at the end of a long week. That's a real reason, not a nostalgic one.
THE RESALE RULE OF THUMB
One bath in the house.
If there's only one bathroom, keeping a bath is the safer move for family buyers. If there are two bathrooms, a walk-in shower in the second one is what people expect, and often what they're hoping for.

WHAT EACH COSTS
Roughly similar, with one exception.
Swapping a bath for a walk-in shower, with the plumbing staying in place, costs about the same as any standard bathroom change. The exception is moving the waste: relocating a drain means lifting floors and re-grading, and a fully tanked walk-in or wet room adds waterproofing and drainage work on top.

Is a walk-in shower better than a bath?
For space, access and day-to-day upkeep, usually yes. For young families and some buyers, a bath still earns its place. It comes down to the house and who lives in it, which is exactly what the site visit is for.
Do I need to keep a bath in the house?
If it's the only bathroom, keeping a bath is the safer choice for resale, especially in family homes. In a house with more than one bathroom, a walk-in shower in the en-suite is completely normal and often what buyers expect.
How much does it cost to swap a bath for a walk-in shower?

Can you fit a walk-in shower in a small bathroom?
Often, yes, and it's one of the best moves for a small room. Removing the bath and enclosure footprint opens everything up. We'll check the floor structure and drainage at the site visit and tell you straight what's possible.
What about a shower over the bath?
The compromise that keeps both, and it works well for occasional use. But if you shower every day, a proper walk-in is a different experience entirely. Worth deciding honestly which one you are.
